Hockey Is Back, But It’s Complicated

Hockey season is starting soon, and I have mixed feelings. On the one hand, I’m super excited! I can’t wait to see all of my favs out on the ice again. I really hope the Devils can at least make it to the playoffs this season, I hope they manage to win with Nico as captain someday, even if it’s not this year. Realistically, it’ll probably be another Oilers/Panthers fight. Ideally, I’d like something new but oh well.

Anyway, the other part of me is not excited for the Carter Hart return, because apparently a bunch of teams have been pursuing him. I know he was found innocent and all, but it still doesn’t sit right with me after hearing the details of that case. If he does come back, I hope he’s the only one. I’ve decided to take a step back from supporting the Flyers this year and I’ve decided the Devils are now my main team. Not that that’s really any different from last year.

This is going to sound very parasocial but after liking Hart so much in that first year of watching hockey I just can’t stomach watching the flyers anymore (no matter how much I love Jamie Drysdale). I’m aware of how stupid that sounds considering two of the accused players were actually on the Devils – but at the time I wasn’t focused on them, and I didn’t really care about those two until I’d heard the rumours.

Overall, I think I’m more excited than not. Especially since the first preseason game is Devils vs Rangers but there’s still that small part of me that’s a little bit sickened by the whole situation.
